January 2012:
How to use Social Media to advance your career
Author: Stephanie Dikaiou

Social networking can be a very useful and important tool for your job search or career advancement. But exercise caution, as it can be damaging if it is not used correctly. There are many cases where a post on Facebook or Twitter cost someone’s career, or damaged their professional credibility.

Social networking can help you create strong contacts and links and get you known in a targeted way. According to studies, 70% of hiring managers search candidates online, therefore you need to make sure you have a strong profile, and update it regularly.

You can create a strong profile in the following ways:

1. Firstly, choose the appropriate social media. Research them, and ask people who use them. Try to find out how each one is used and for which purpose, so that you can choose the appropriate one for you. For example Linkedin is mostly devoted to business. It has advanced profile features, such as projects you are working on, publications, you can even post your CV. Facebook is the most popular social networking site, and it is used by everyone, not just professionals. It has a more social feel, as you can access pictures of friends, find out where they are going, what they are thinking, what they are up to. With Twitter on the other hand, you can follow trends and announcements of groups, companies or individuals, and you can post your own announcements and news for your followers.

2. Always have a profile picture. Make sure you look professional but approachable (a smile always helps!).

3. Include an attractive headline (mostly for Linkedin). Make sure that your headline is a marketing slogan, not just your current title. For example, Bob Jones, Sales and Marketing Consultant, is not as memorable or impressive as Bob Jones, Marketing Consultant, making you a fierce competitor. Or Jessica Bale, Expert Event Planner, creating unforgettable events.

4. Update your status with meaningful and exciting information, projects, and conferences you are attending.

5. Join professional groups and post relevant and interesting information that will help make you visible to targeted professionals.

6. Periodically update your profile and reach out for new connections.

7. Use each social media appropriately. For instance, you need to be more relaxed when using Twitter compared to Linkedin. When using Twitter project your personality, add fun stuff and be creative.

8. Understand that social networking is not for everyone! Use it only if you will spend time on it, and only if you will enjoy it. Otherwise you will project a negative image, in which case, you are better off without it!
